Caring for Mulberry Silk - What is Momme?

Caring for Mulberry Silk - What is Momme?

As you know, our Mulberry silk pillowcases and Mulberry silk sleep masks are machine washable. You can also hang them on the line to dry (following our guidelines).

Mulberry silk is a luxury fabric. When it comes to measuring its quality, ‘thread count’ isn’t used like it is for cotton because silk fibres are much finer than cotton (so you can easily reach a very high number for a thread count). The term 'momme' is used instead.

Momme describes the silk’s weight and density. The higher the momme, the more strands of silk and therefore the higher the quality and more durable the fabric. The momme measurement generally ranges anywhere from 11 to 25.

Does this mean the higher the momme the better? Not always. 19-momme while higher than 11-momme is still considered 'lower quality', while 25-momme is much too heavy for clothes or bedding and is usually used for decor, such as curtains.

22-momme is the perfect balance and is what our silk pillowcases and silk eye masks are proudly made with. Combine that with certified grade 6A Mulberry Silk strands (the highest quality on the market), and you have yourself the most luxurious and personally beneficial product you can possibly sleep on.
